I am on a tourist visa here in Spain, I have the opportunity to become an au pair would I have to go back to the US to obtain a visa? or can it be done from within spain?

Hi there, technically you’d have to go back to your home country to apply for a long stay visa! I know that’s not the news you’d want to hear!  The type of visa you would apply for would depend on how formal the aupair job is.  If it is not an official job, you could simply apply for a “non lucrative” visa, which a is a long stay visa without permission to work. You need to show you have enough money in the bank to support you during your time in Spain. You could also apply for a student visa if you plan to also study while you are in Spain, but the requirements are very similar to the non lucrative visa.
