I wanted to see how I could get my regresso and renew my NIE before the end of May. I am leaving Spain for the summer because I couldn’t find a summer job here. I am confused. Can I do the renewal paperwork in early May and then go back closer to the time I leave to get regresso? Any help would be amazing. I am trying to get home by the 29th of May and would return by the 26th of August.

Assuming your card expires before your plan to leave the country, you should definitely apply for renewal, and apply for a regreso.  You can apply for the regreso at any point that your renewal application is “en tramite”. The regreso is good for 90 days from the time you receive it. So, you should get the regreso right before you leave on May 29 (assuming your new residency card hasn’t arrived by then). You can find more information about how to apply for a autorizacion de regreso in this blog post: http://spainguru.es/2015/04/15/how-to-get-an-autorizacion-de-regreso/
