Hi there, I am in the process of doing the student visa modification to a work permit. I was wondering however, if after a few months I decide to change companies and work for someone else, will I be penalized? Am I required to stay with the company for a specific amount of time?

Hi Alexandra,
Once your “permiso de trabajo temporal” (temporary work permit) is approved after the student visa modification, the employer you applied with needs to “dar te de alta” in social security and put you on their books as an employee. However, after the first month you have no obligation to remain with that employer. You could immediately start looking for other work. You would be eligible to work for any company in Spain. The important thing is that you are employed (by anyone) at the time of renewing your residency card the following year.
Note that this is true with this type of work permit, but work permits obtained under different schemes (such as the highly skilled worker scheme) have different requirements.
