UK S1: Duration, registration, and renewal

Question about the UK S1

Does anyone know
1) How long the UK S1 lasts
2) Do you have to pre – register on the INSS website before you apply for your Spanish non lucrative visa and enter Spain?
3) What if the S1 has expired before you enter Spain, can you request another?

Answers

These are the answers of some Facebook group members:

“The UK S1 is for UK state retired people resident in Spain… How can it expire! You apply for the S1, by calling DWP Newcastle once you’ve reached state pension age they send you 2 completed forms following the telephone interview you keep one and submit to Spanish authorities… So if you are on the NLV you renew until you do the S1 application”

“Even though they ask for a starting date, it doesnt matter if you run over the time, it took me 4 months to get it registered in Spain, but no problem now.”

“I just applied for a man who has an end date on his s1. He has 10 years from 2020 to 2030 I’ve seen others with 2 years”

“As far as I know the S1 does not expire, when you request the S1 they ask what date you want it to start from. We did not go to Spain until a few months after this date and it was fine. London Embassy required us to register it before our appointment, but you can only register it partially. When you get to Spain you need your TIE to finish registering it before you can register with a doctor to obtain your prescriptions etc.”

“I think I have found the answer on the Gov website. You can only request an S1 within 90 days of your travel date. You can apply for an S1 form up to 90 days before moving to live in an EU country. You can ask for the form to be sent to your UK address if you need it for your visa application.

“I applied for ours in November 2020 as we were going for residency under the withdrawal agreement. Our solicitor we had doing it for us messed up and we had to come home. Now we are going with the NLV and they wont accept our old S1’s. I have been trying to get an upto date one since last November and still not got them. Many phone calls, emails and hand written letters. I did get one back yesterday but it had the same start date nov 2020. So give yourself plenty of time because they are useless. You do have to give them a date when you want it to start.”

In summary, according to responses from Spainguru’s Facebook group members, the S1 is a form for UK state retired people who are residents in Spain and it does not expire. However, there may be a specific period of validity, such as 2 or 10 years depending on the individual’s circumstances. It is important to apply for the S1 within 90 days of the travel date and to give a specific start date. It is also recommended to give plenty of time for the process, as delays and errors may occur. Finally, pre-registering on the INSS website before applying for a Spanish non lucrative visa is not required, but it may speed up the process once you are in Spain.
