Question
Has anyone here applied for a Spain non lucrative visa as a dual citizen (Mexican/American) in a US consulate? With your Mexican passport?
Answers
These are the answers of Spainguru’s Facebook group members:
“US consulate wants US passport.”
“In USA you need the US passport.”
“I sent mails to different consulates and the answer was consistent: US consulate wants US passport.”
“We did the opposite- applied in México with US passports. You can do the same, you just need legal status in the country you apply in, and the documents to prove it. One of my children was a dual citizen, and applied with his U.S. docs.”
Conclusion
The consensus among members of the Facebook group regarding the application process for dual citizens (Mexican/American) at US consulates is clear: the US passport is generally required. This requirement was confirmed through direct inquiries to various consulates.
However, there’s flexibility in the application process when you have legal residence status in the country where you apply. For example, in the case in which you are a Mexican with residency status in the United States, under your Mexican passport.
Also, applying outside the US; for example, applying in Mexico with US documentation is possible, provided that the applicant has legal status and the necessary documents in the country of application.
