How can I catch up on US taxes after many years of not filing?

Question

Any success stories of peeps who were able to catch up on US taxes after many years of not filing? I’m sure it’s common and I’m in the process of gathering all the forms I need to get things rolling with Expat Tax Online, I just thought it would be nice to hear from those who’ve been there and are finally breathing a bit easier after from getting all caught up.

These are the answers of some Facebook group members:

“I’m one of those people. I went through the amnesty program last year with Expat Tax Online. I returned this year as a customer, so I think that speaks for my experience with them.Keep in mind, my German wife and I have a complex tax situation, but they walked us through everything and answered all our questions. Lastly, price/performance is better than any other option I’m aware of. Highly recommend!”

“I filed my back taxes of 5 years with myexpattaxes and was really happy…it was super easy, they are very transparent, and I also received my stimulus”

“I did this a few years ago using the amnesty programme and have been filing with Expat Tax Online as a customer ever since. The process almost feels ‘easy’ now and I always have quick answers to any questions”

“I went more than 7 years not filing (didn’t realize I had to) but it’s super easy now. Did the amnesty program through expat tax online and have used them the last 3 years now to file my yearly taxes. Has been stress free. Would recommend setting up a Wise account beforehand (if you don’t have a US bank account) so any stimulus or tax returns can be deposited electronically. Waiting on physical checks and then trying to cash them internationally isn’t always easy.”

“I highly recommend setting up a USD account with Wise. The US Treasury paid stimulus money straight into my account — no waiting for cheques to arrive by post.”

“I also filed my back taxes using the amnesty programme with Expat Tax Online about 4 years ago and have been a returning customer since then. I have received all stimulus checks as well as the ease of having someone else do my accounts. Would highly recommend.”

“Expat Tax Online Help filed for me after not doing it for 18 years! They were very helpful and affordable. When I got in touch with them, the relief was almost instantaneous. They were very reassuring”

“Not only did Expat Tax Online get me square with the IRS after 20 years of not filing in the US, but I also got stimulus checks (ALL of them!) that more than offset the cost of their service.”

“Same here. Used expat taxes for amnesty program, now use them each year. Have a wise account too. (Got all 3 covid rebates)”

“Took advantage of the amnesty programme a few years ago to catch up after 20+ years. Worth every penny just for peace of mind but also got all stimulus checks and discovered I’ll also get an unexpected decent social security pension next year. I too opened a Wise account for inexpensive foreign exchange transfers and more recently joined ACA primarily for the State Department Federal Credit Union account to have it paid in to. Thoroughly recommend it.”

“Yep me too. Twenty years of non filing (who knew?!) and Expat Taxes helped me take advantage of the amnesty program. Have been filing with them ever since. I’ve received every stimulus check as well. A big relief. Now if I could only go to the US to visit!”

“It’s criminal what the US government does to his citizens, the US is the only country in the world that taxes their citizens event after they aren’t residents of the US. This is called Citizen Based Taxation , all other countries have Resident Based Taxation which means that you only pay taxes in the country you are resident.
