What are the neighborhoods in Madrid that are safe and not so expensive?

Last Updated on March 18, 2026 by Bruno Bianchi

Question

I am looking to spend a few months of the year in Madrid. What neighborhoods in Madrid would you recommend as safe and up and coming or middle range? Not the fanciest most expensive and not the other extreme either. I do especially like parks and green areas if that’s possible, but not a must.

“I like Las Tablas area, vast open space, a bit away from crowd which is good at Covid era, however connected well with bustling city center.”

“I love Conde Duque…quieter than Malasaña, but super close to everything central”

“Alcala de Henares is about 35 kilometers from Madrid but still in the community of Madrid. Bus, train to Madrid… if you like a cheaper and less crazy life… this is the place”

“Antonio Machado, valdebebas, arroyo fresno, principe pio or near Madrid Rio, some areas near casa de campo, near pintor rosales, etc, etc”

“Well… Even bad neighborhoods in Madrid aren’t bad at all. Usually the south of Madrid is the poorest zone so look at the center up to the north. That said, I moved from Sao Paulo (Brazil) to Madrid looking for safety, today I love in one of the cheapest neighborhoods around (Villaverde alto) and feel very safe to walk around at any time. Maybe for safety just avoid Lavapies around the center and that’s pretty much it. Madrid is hella safe even for European standards.”
