Can you get car insurance without a Spanish bank account or NIE number?

Last Updated on March 18, 2026 by Bruno Bianchi

Question

I’m moving to Valencia in 2 weeks and need to buy a car as soon as I arrive. I’ll be paying cash, but I wonder if I can get a car insurance without a Spanish bank account or NIE number.

“You need an NIE and padron…”

“I think it will be quite difficult to insure it without a Spanish bank account (almost for all these kind of things you will need a bank account and therefore NIE). To avoid delays and problems, I suggest you to open a revolut or santander account that are very straightforward to open.”

“You must have a NIE and a padron to buy from a dealer. From a person, IDK”

“For a second hand car you’ll need NIE either way to change the name, for the contract “compra-venta”, for insurance etc. Bank account no since you can pay cash”
