Proof of Accommodation Requirements for Visiting Spain

When entering Spain as a tourist under the 90-day Schengen visa waiver, border officials may ask for proof of accommodation. Acceptable documentation includes hotel reservations or booking confirmations, a rental agreement or Airbnb confirmation, or a letter of invitation (carta de invitación) from someone residing in Spain.

The carta de invitación is an official document that a Spanish resident obtains from their local police station (Comisaría de Policía). It confirms they are inviting you to stay at their residence. The process takes 1-4 weeks and costs approximately €75. While not always checked at the border, having proper accommodation proof is technically required and can be requested at any point during your stay.

In addition to accommodation proof, you may also be asked to show evidence of sufficient financial means (approximately €120 per day or a minimum of €1,080 for the trip), return flight tickets, and valid travel insurance. These requirements are part of the standard Schengen entry conditions and apply to all non-EU visitors.
