Tips for Booking a NIE or TIE Appointment

These are the answers of some Facebook group members:

“A local gestor often has far more luck. They know the officials; know the system.”

“My advice is to just go and say you need the NIE (to buy a car the next day, for example) and that you couldn’t get an appointment any time soon. We have had 100% success taking care of things like this without appointments but we are in Bilbao which is a small(ish) town with fewer people waiting for appointments.”

“I couldn’t even see the option for an appointment in my town, so I booked in a different one (honestly thinking that just that one processed NIEs). When I arrived I was told by a very pleasant lady that in fact I should’ve registered where I lived, but that once as a courtesy they could do it for me. Probably helped that I was smiling, polite, and spoke Spanish. I’m not saying it will work for you tho”

“Try booking with your NIE number and also with your passport number”

“Just keep trying. Appt times are renewed at the same time each day. Once they’re all filled, you have to wait til the next day. It took me almost 3 months before someone told me this.”

“Try elsewhere but in the same province. It would help if you told us where you are.”

“I had the same issue. I called them and they said that I need to try between 8.30 and 9.00 in the morning. It worked for me”

Conclusion: Getting Your NIE or TIE Appointment

Getting an appointment for your NIE or TIE can be a frustrating process due to high demand and limited availability. However, there are several strategies that have worked for others. Many recommend using a local gestor, as they often have insider knowledge and can navigate the system more effectively.

Others have had success by visiting the office in person, explaining their situation, and asking for help without an appointment, especially in smaller towns. Another useful tip is to try booking at different times of the day, as appointment slots are often renewed early in the morning.

Lastly, booking in nearby towns or trying both your NIE and passport number when searching for appointments can also help. Patience is key, as it may take time to secure a slot, but persistence often pays off.
