I just got my NIE card last week and it said “no autoriza a trabajar”. I am a language school student in Spain. I need to support myself for living cost and other things .
That’s why I search jobs and in interviews , they want to hire me but they saw my NIE card. No one want to hire me even for part time. What am I supposed to do now, should I move another country ? Or is there any way to change authorize to work?

“if you have a TIE that says “no autoriza a trabajar” it doesnt mean you really aren’t allowed to work. You have to go to the extanjería and apply for a work permit. That process could take 2 months though and one of the most common reasons why employers won’t hire people on student visas like auxiliares.”

“I thought that student residency type was coming with the right to work up to 20 hours weekly. But that’s if you’re a full-time student. Language schools and language assistants at school get a student visa but most of them still need to apply for the permit to work.”
“If you have any offer related to your study, you must submit a application along with that contract at foreign office. There are chances, you may get a formal letter of authorization.”

“As of last October, with a student visa you can apply for a work permit for part-time, which is up to 30 hours, as long as it doesn’t interfere with the schedule of your studies. The best thing to do would be talk with immigration lawyers, because there’s a lot of mixed/unclear information online/that people will tell you, and everyone’s situations are different.”

“Unfortunately, only full time students get an automatic work permit. This was added on the last change of the law in August 2022 (there was no automatic work permit before).
You will need a job offer/contract to ask for permission to work, or you will need to prepare a business plan and get it approved by a Spanish institution to apply as a freelancer.
But almost no company wants to offer you a job because it takes a long time to be approved. (If you find one, you are super very lucky).
The other thing that you can do is to change your student permit to a residence with work permit. Again, you need a job contract or a business plan. To make the change, you must wait until the end of your studies because you also need to provide a certificate from your school proving that you completed your studies that year. Thus you can only do it at the end.
I’m in this situation and I’m leaving the country. I’m going to Portugal. I’m applying from Spain to the Portuguese “job seeker visa”, which allows non-EU citizens to search for a job for 4 months, and once you get a job you can apply for residence. So you get residence in 4-5 months total. And you can legally work while having the visa and waiting for your residence permit.”
