Spanish Non Lucrative Visa: Choosing Health Insurance starting date

Question

Taking out health insurance for the Spanish non lucrative visa is a little confusing. We are submitting our application the first of June. We are hopeful to move to Spain the middle of October. Do we start the policy for our application for the first of June or starting date in October but still showing we have a policy in place?

Answers

These are the answers of Spainguru’s Facebook group members:

“Use the date you entered on your form (visa application) when you want to be in Spain. I would, however, double check with your consulate as I have read conflicting answers on different FB groups. I submitted my paperwork for the health insurance using the date I am planning to enter Spain. I haven’t heard from the consulate yet to confirm my situation…”

“When we bought our Health Insurance the provider started it a day before we went to BLS. We had to provide positive paperwork to ensure that we were fully compliant with the rules, which at the time, Nov 23, stated that we needed proof of everything including Health Insurance, P45 etc, etc!

This was also the advice we were given by the solicitor that walked us through the application.”

“I’ve put start date 1st September to match my date on application. I bought the insurance about a month ago and submitted my application yesterday.”

“We bought ours from the end of October and our appointment at BLS was the week before”

Conclusion

When applying for the Spanish Non Lucrative Visa, timing the start of your health insurance policy can be tricky and depends on your expected date of arrival in Spain.

Most members suggest aligning your insurance start date with your planned entry date into Spain, as indicated in your visa application.

It’s also recommended to verify with your consulate to address any discrepancies found in different advice online. Preparing your insurance to start just before your consulate visit for visa processing seems to be a common practice among applicants.
