Question
I’m a Mexican citizen born in Mexico, and I would like to move to Spain. I heard that if I stay there for 2 years straight, I could apply for Spanish citizenship.
However, I believe that first I have to get a permanent resident card to be able to do that. What can I do to work towards Spanish citizenship as a Mexican citizen?”
Answers
These are the answers of Spainguru’s Facebook group members:
“Not really. Any type of residence would work and would count towards the 2-year Ibero-American fast track. Examples are non-lucrative residence or digital nomad residence.”
“Most visas other than student ones will give you legal residency.”
Conclusion
As a Mexican citizen (by birth or citizenship obtained from parents born in Mexico), you are eligible for the Ibero-American fast track, which allows you to apply for Spanish citizenship after two years of legal residency in Spain. You do not need a permanent residency card to start this process.
Visas such as the non-lucrative visa or digital nomad visa will grant you the legal residency required to meet the two-year requirement.
It’s important to choose a visa that provides legal residency status to ensure your path toward Spanish citizenship.
