Spain Non Lucrative Visa at Houston: Is Online Schooling Accepted for Kids?

NLV Houston: Is Online Schooling Accepted for Kids?

Prepping for our Houston Spain Non Lucrative Visa appointment with kids. In the event that they ask for proof of private school enrollment, I’d like to have a plan. I think someone mentioned using IVLA online school Online Schooling for that.

Has anyone done that? It’s an accredited US-based school. I am wondering if that would work for the application.

Any other online schools? My thinking is, online schools are probably easier to get enrolled at at a random date, so would prefer to go that route. Thank you!

These are the answers of Spainguru’s Spanish Non Lucrative Visa group members:

“Houston asked for proof that my child is currently enrolled in school (Texas) not sure why? But we were able to email her report card.”

“This is so crazy! But easier for us to accomplish. Thank you for sharing.”

“A special thank you for this! They asked for proof of school in the US first thing. Thanks to you we were prepared with the report cards!”

“You need to check, as I understand if applying for a child visa, they have to be enrolled in an international private school. Online schools will not be allowed. Once in Spain and you have the visa you can enroll them in a Spanish school. It’s expected as part of your 1st renewal that they have been in school for 6 months.”

“Where did you find this information? Since it’s not an official requirement and it’s not spelled out anywhere, I can’t find any specifics or rules.”

“I have looked into everything I can on here and other sites, as we are taking a child with us who we are guardians for. We have had to do a huge amount to sort it. We are waiting now for our visas but we are in the UK.

The girl who collected our papers commented that it was good we had enrolled him in an international school. Maybe try searching the rules of school education in Spain then visas for children. Good luck.”

Conclusion: Online Schooling and NLV at Houston Consulate

Applicants at the Houston consulate have reported that officials requested proof of current school enrollment for children—even in the U.S. prior to departure. One family successfully presented a report card to satisfy this requirement.

While online schooling (such as IVLA) is a convenient option, it’s not officially confirmed whether it meets the consulate’s expectations for the Spain Non Lucrative Visa, especially for children.

Some members warn that Spanish authorities expect children on NLVs to attend in-person school once in Spain, ideally an international or Spanish school. This could also play a role in the visa renewal process, where proof of consistent education is sometimes expected.

Because this requirement is not officially published, experiences may vary by consulate or even by consular officer. However, being prepared with school documents—such as enrollment confirmations or report cards—seems to be a wise move for NLV applicants with children attending the Houston consulate.
