We had our BLS appointment in Los Angeles this morning (Non-Lucrative Visa). Sharing a few details in case it helps others.
Corrections they allowed (EX-01 and 790)
We had a couple of details filled in incorrectly on the EX-01 and 790 forms. They let us go across the street to UPS, print corrected forms, and bring them back, so we were still able to submit both applications the same day.
What caused our issue: we already own a property in Spain (purchased Dec 2024). For the contact/communication sections on EX-01 and 790, we needed to use our Spain address, not our U.S. address.
Appointment flow
Ours was a family appointment (my wife and me). I applied as the primary applicant. They saw us separately. I went first.
Employment status and tax filings
I’m currently working and will retire March 31 2026. My wife retired Dec 31, 2025. They asked for our 2024 tax year filing from both of us.
Financials and bank statements
We brought statements from multiple accounts, but they only cared about the account that met the required amount for year one (in our case, our joint savings).
They asked for:
The most recent three months of bank statements (for us: Oct–Dec 2025), and
The prior year-end balance, meaning the December 2024 statement as well.
We used standard statements printed from online banking and they accepted them. We were not able to get certified statements, and it did not seem to be a problem.
Copies and what they actually wanted
We brought way too much paperwork. Most items only required a single copy.
Items they wanted as originals plus translated copies:
- FBI background check
- Medical certificate
- Marriage certificate (for spouse applicant)
For Spanish health insurance, the certificate letter was enough. They did not want the full policy, but they did check that the certificate referenced the required coverage terms.
Spouse portion
Once they had my full packet (including corrected forms), they called my wife in. Since our documentation was essentially the same, her part took about 5 minutes.
After submission and timing note
We both received confirmations and tracking numbers, so now it’s the waiting game.
We already booked a transatlantic cruise (Miami to Barcelona) departing April 26, 2026, so I asked about timing. The interviewer seemed confident the visas would arrive in time and mentioned that backlogs (especially student visas) have been clearing, so processing is expected to move faster.

If the visas aren’t ready, each applicant must pick up their own passport (one person can’t pick up both).
