This article is based on a real firsthand experience shared by a Spainguru community member who applied for the Spain non lucrative visa Washington DC at the BLS office in May 2026. It captures a retired couple’s appointment day, the documents the BLS agent requested, and the lessons learned about keeping every form consistent from the very first online booking.
Firsthand Experience: Spain Non Lucrative Visa Washington DC
Here is a recap of our NLV appointment at the BLS in Washington, DC. My partner and I arrived at 8:30am. We were applying separately and had “prime time” appointments scheduled back to back at 8:50am and 9:20am. They were gracious enough to take us together at 8:30am. There was no one else in the waiting area at that time, but by about 9:15 the room was completely full.

Start the Moving to Spain Hub →A few helpful tidbits we want to pass along to anyone preparing for the same appointment:
- Have extra blank copies of all NLV BLS forms printed and ready.
- Bring 2 additional copies of your FBI summary report, the Apostille, and the Translation.
- Wait to sign the BLS forms until you are sitting in front of the BLS agent.
- The 790 form needs your “US home address” in the top section, not your residence address in Spain.
- On the EX-01 form, Section 4 should be filled in with your address in Spain. We did not fill in the “DNI/NIE/PAS” field.
Stay consistent with all of your information: names, marital status, arrival date, and everything else. This is critical, and it should be done from the very start, even before you press the button to begin the BLS appointment reservation online.
What we did not realize at the time of booking the appointment was that you are actually filling out the BLS NLV visa application during that process. So if you later download and complete an updated national visa application form from the BLS website and present that version during your appointment, any difference from what you entered online may raise questions. Have your ducks in a row before you click “reserve appointment.”
We presented federal retirement pension information along with our other financials. They asked if we had an “Employment Termination Letter” with a date of employment separation. As former federal employees, nothing like this exists from OPM as far as we are aware, and we did not have any other official, notarized, translated documentation to present. We could show “when” the pension began, but not “when” we officially separated. This is an open question for other federal retirees seeking an NLV.

Explore Cities →None of our banks or financial institutions could produce exactly what BLS requires and have it translated. They definitely wanted to see the “date of account opening.” We made sure to bring 12 months of printed statements with us. This BLS agent only asked for 3 recent months of statements, in addition to the institutional financial account validation letter (translated), as well as an end-of-the-previous-year statement, for example the December 2025 statement.
As part of your affidavit statement, be sure to clearly state that you are “Retired” in addition to the other suggested language, for example: “I declare I am not working nor will I pursue any type of work or employment in the future, on site, in person, or remotely.”
Please confirm with your health insurance broker or company that the “Certificate of Insurance” clearly includes the one full year of required coverage dates, for example July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027. That date information is not sufficient if it only appears in other documentation sent by the broker. It must be included in the Certificate of Coverage itself.
Our appointment ran from 8:30am, and the BLS agent was patient and extremely helpful, even making copies of documents we did not have extras of, and reminding us that we still had time to finish re-filling out BLS forms. We multi-tasked and completed re-filling the documents while presenting other documents, to save time and keep things moving. When we asked about turnaround approval time, they first said “about 3 to 4 months,” but after further inquiry said they had seen some approved in 3 to 4 weeks.

Spain Non Lucrative Visa Washington DC: What This Experience Reveals
This single appointment highlights several practical realities of the Spain non lucrative visa Washington DC process that are easy to overlook until you are sitting across from a BLS agent. The following themes turn one couple’s day into reusable guidance.
Spain Non Lucrative Visa Washington DC: Consistency From the First Online Booking
The most important lesson from this experience is that the online appointment reservation at the BLS is not just scheduling. It is the moment you actually submit your national visa application. Any later printed version you bring must match it exactly.
- Names, marital status, and arrival dates must be identical across the online form and every printed document.
- If you need to change anything afterward, complete the national visa application PDF, bring the corrected version, and tell the agent you have changes.
- You cannot edit the application you submitted during reservation, so accuracy from the start avoids questions later.
Spain Non Lucrative Visa Washington DC: Bank Statement Requirements
The applicants prepared 12 months of statements but the agent only retained a subset. This shows that bringing more than the minimum is wise, even when the agent ultimately takes less.
- The agent kept 3 recent months of statements rather than a full year.
- An end-of-previous-year statement (December 2025) was specifically requested.
- The “date of account opening” was important to the reviewer.
- A translated institutional financial account validation letter accompanied the statements.
Spain Non Lucrative Visa Washington DC: Proof of Retirement for Federal Employees
A particularly important nuance for retired federal workers is the request for an employment termination or separation letter. Pension start documentation alone may not satisfy a request for the official separation date.
- OPM does not necessarily issue a standalone “employment termination letter.”
- Community members noted that an SF-50 may list both start and exit dates.
- An agency retirement letter (for example from SSA HR) can serve as proof of resignation or acceptance of retirement.
Spain Non Lucrative Visa Washington DC: Health Insurance Certificate Details
This case shows how specific the health insurance documentation must be. The required one-year coverage dates must appear on the Certificate of Coverage itself, not only in supporting emails or attachments.
- The certificate should state the full coverage year, for example July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027.
- Coverage dates buried in other broker documentation may not be accepted.
- Confirm the exact wording with your broker before the appointment.
Spain Non Lucrative Visa Washington DC: Forms and Address Fields
Small form details mattered at this BLS office. The applicant flagged two specific fields that are easy to fill incorrectly.
- The 790 form needs the “US home address” in its top section, not the future Spanish address.
- The EX-01 Section 4 should contain the address in Spain, and the “DNI/NIE/PAS” field was left blank.
- Forms were signed only in front of the agent, and spare blank copies proved useful for corrections.
Spain Non Lucrative Visa Washington DC: Payment Method at the Appointment
Payment logistics are a detail many applicants miss. At this office the registration fee paid when booking is credited toward the appointment fees, but the accepted payment method is narrow.
- The amount paid when booking the appointment is credited to the BLS appointment fees.
- Bring a debit card, as the office does not accept credit cards.
Spain Non Lucrative Visa Washington DC: Appointment Booking Challenges
Getting an appointment for the Spain non lucrative visa Washington DC remains one of the harder steps. This applicant secured back-to-back “prime time” morning slots, and the waiting room filled completely within the first hour, underscoring how quickly capacity is used.
- Appointments are made through the BLS online system, where you also complete the visa application.
- Couples applying separately should book two appointments, since family appointments are rare and being seen together is not guaranteed.
- A registration fee (reported around the low three figures) applies at booking and is credited toward later fees.
- Monitor the BLS portal closely, as slots can open and fill quickly.
Spain Non Lucrative Visa Washington DC: Processing Times
For the Spain non lucrative visa Washington DC, processing time estimates in this experience varied. The agent initially cited roughly 3 to 4 months, then noted some applications had been approved in as little as 3 to 4 weeks. Community members reported reassuring comments from processors, with one applicant told not to worry because “the consulate just wants to see the final numbers.” Treat these as anecdotal ranges rather than guarantees.
Comments from Other Spainguru Community Members
The discussion generated several valuable insights from other applicants who applied around the same time or shared related guidance:
- Couples applying as individuals should book two separate appointments, because most locations no longer offer family appointments and being seen together is not guaranteed.
- The application submitted during online reservation cannot be edited afterward; corrections require bringing an updated national visa application to the appointment.
- Canceling an appointment to fully restart can mean forfeiting the registration fee, so review the PDF emailed with your confirmation carefully.
- Bring a debit card, since credit cards are not accepted, and the booking fee is credited toward appointment costs.
- One applicant whose agency (SSA) sent a retirement start-date letter used it as proof of resignation or acceptance of retirement.
- For federal employees, the SF-50 may list both start and exit dates, which can help document the separation date.
- Another applicant the same week reported a smooth appointment lasting roughly 40 minutes with a professional processor who said approval was expected.
- Agents may accept an explanatory letter to fill gaps in a bank’s “certification,” covering average balances and the December 31 ending balance.
- Reviewers often take fewer documents than offered, for example only the three most recent bank statements and one year of tax returns rather than several.
- Background checks, apostilles, and marriage certificates with apostilles received close attention from the reviewer.
Taken together, these comments confirm that requirements and reviewer behavior vary from case to case, so over-preparing your documentation is the safest approach.

FAQ: Spain Non Lucrative Visa Washington DC
What documents are required for the Spain non lucrative visa Washington DC?
Applicants typically submit the national visa application, the EX-01 and 790 forms, an FBI background check with apostille and sworn translation, bank statements, a financial validation letter, a health insurance certificate, and an affidavit. In this experience the agent also asked about an employment separation letter for retirees.
Why does consistency with the online booking matter so much?
Because the online reservation is where you actually file the visa application. Any printed version you later bring must match the online entries. Inconsistencies in names, marital status, or dates can raise questions at the appointment.
Do I need to resign from my job before applying?
The NLV does not permit working in Spain, so applicants commonly include an affidavit declaring they will not work. Retirees in this case were asked for proof of employment separation, which can be shown through an SF-50 or an agency retirement letter.
How many months of bank statements are required?
This applicant brought 12 months but the agent only kept 3 recent months plus an end-of-previous-year (December) statement. Bringing a full year is a safe approach even if fewer are ultimately retained.
What health insurance qualifies for the Spain non lucrative visa Washington DC?
A full-coverage policy with no copays and a one-year term is generally expected. The Certificate of Coverage itself must clearly state the coverage dates, for example July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027.
Do couples need separate appointments?
Yes, when applying as individuals you should book two appointments. Family appointments are rare, and although the office in this case saw the couple together, being seen jointly is not guaranteed.
What payment method is accepted at the BLS appointment?
Bring a debit card, as credit cards were not accepted at this office. The fee paid when booking the appointment is credited toward the fees due at the appointment.
How long does it take to get approved?
In this experience the agent cited roughly 3 to 4 months, but added that some applications had been approved in 3 to 4 weeks. Timelines vary, so treat these as estimates rather than promises.
Can I work remotely on the Spain non lucrative visa?
No. The NLV does not allow employment, including remote work. Applicants typically declare in an affidavit that they will not work on site, in person, or remotely.
How hard is it to get an appointment in Washington DC?
Appointments can be difficult to secure and the waiting room filled completely within the first hour in this case. Monitor the BLS portal closely and book promptly when slots appear. For broader planning, see Spainguru’s Moving to Spain guide.
