Start the Moving to Spain Hub →Hi All,
I just wanted to share our NLV application process to hopefully inform anyone going through the process themselves.
We went to BLS London for our NLV appointment on 1 December and honestly couldn’t fault the staff, everyone was friendly and efficient. It was very busy when we arrived, but we were seen quickly and both applications were submitted in around 40 minutes.
On 2 December, we received a text from BLS confirming that our applications had been sent to the London Consulate and were under process.
After seeing lots of recent posts about visas being approved from BLS London in 8–10 days, we kept checking the BLS website on a daily basis. It stayed at “processing at mission” for a while. On the morning of 16 December, it was still showing the same, but when I checked again at 4 pm, it had changed to “passports ready for despatch.” Then at about 8 pm, we received courier texts confirming our passports would be delivered the next day.
We were absolutely thrilled, 16 days from London to Almería!
We’re currently renting and wanted enough time to give a month’s notice, and we also need to isolate our parrot for 30 days, so we set our medical insurance to start from 1 February. We did wonder if this might delay things, but as you can see, it didn’t at all.
Our visa doesn’t start until 1 February 2026, which is exactly what we wanted — feeling blissful.

Understanding the Spain Non Lucrative Visa London process
Applying for a Spain non lucrative visa through London typically involves two stages: submission via BLS and processing by the Spanish Consulate. This experience highlights several important procedural realities.
Appointment day at BLS London
Despite high demand and a busy environment, the appointment itself was handled efficiently. Both applications were submitted in approximately 40 minutes, which aligns with other reported experiences from London. This suggests that preparation and complete documentation are key factors in keeping appointment times short.
Communication after submission
The applicant received confirmation by text the day after submission, stating that the application had been forwarded to the consulate. This is a critical step, as once the application status changes to “processing at mission,” the timeline is largely controlled by the consulate rather than BLS.
Processing timelines for Spain non lucrative visa London
One of the most common questions relates to how long a Spain non lucrative visa takes when applied for in London. In this case, the total processing time was 16 days from appointment to passport dispatch notification. While timelines can vary, this example demonstrates that relatively fast approvals are possible, particularly when documentation is complete and there are no requests for additional information.
Insurance start date concerns
A frequent concern among applicants is whether setting a future start date for private medical insurance could delay approval. In this case, insurance was intentionally set to begin on 1 February, well after the December application date. The outcome clearly shows that this did not negatively affect processing time or approval, which is an important reassurance for applicants managing rental notice periods, pet relocation, or staged moves.
Visa validity start date
The visa start date was aligned with the insurance start date, beginning on 1 February 2026. This demonstrates that applicants can, within reason, coordinate their intended move date with their documentation, provided everything is clearly presented.
Comments from other Spainguru community members
Several other community members responded with comments and questions that add further context and useful comparisons.
Some members congratulated the applicants and noted how encouraging it was to read a smooth Spain non lucrative visa London experience, especially for those feeling anxious about the process.
One member highlighted a contrasting experience, reporting nearly 15 weeks of waiting time through Manchester for a Spain non lucrative visa, with limited progress updates. This comparison reinforces how processing times can vary significantly depending on location and consular workload.
Another member asked for clarification about BLS, questioning whether it is the Spanish consulate or a private company. This reflects a common point of confusion among applicants. BLS acts as an external service provider that collects applications and forwards them to the Spanish Consulate, which makes the final decision.
Other comments confirmed similar smooth experiences at BLS London, supporting the idea that, while not guaranteed, efficient processing is possible.
