Non Lucrative Visa Rejection: Real Applicant Stories
These are the answers from Spainguru’s Facebook group members:
“I was refused at Manchester last year ‘for having artificial funds’ because it was gifted money I re applied through Edinburgh as moved up north and was accepted no problem.”

“artificial funds?? You wouldn’t apply surely if you didn’t have enough? Crazy but glad you got there in the end.”
“Application’s Consulate / Country: San Francisco Consulate. Application date: July 31st, 2024. Refusal date: February 26th, 2025.
This was a verbal denial, we had to physically visit the consulate twice from Seattle due to them not answering, no mail, no tracking information received and they still had our passports. Main income source: Short-term rentals (no savings). Applied as joint (not married, domestic partner certificate).
Reason given: The most absurd reason — our letter of intent had a verbiage error. We wrote ‘gestionamos’ which was reason enough for them to believe that we were managing them even though we don’t live where the STR are.
We do not have a management company, but have an entire team that takes care of everything. We also had proof, but they didn’t want to listen and just said ‘No podemos procesarlo.’ Our lawyers did not catch the verbiage error. We worked with a very recognized, highly rated company from Barcelona.
Appeal (yes/no + outcome): No, because we never received any official denial document to appeal. Due to this we were not able to receive a refund for our prepaid health insurance either as they need official proof ($1,800). We will try again at a different consulate (we are relocating to another state for a year) and hopefully have a better outcome!”
“I manage my rental property myself and was approved by SF. So sorry about your experience.”
“Application’s Consulate / Country: Washington D.C Consulate. Application date: April 29, 2024 (refused to submit application). May 31, 2024 (Submitted). Refusal date: June 2024. Main income source: Savings and rental income. Applied alone or with family: Family. Reason given: They do not accept rental income + our $ was not in the right accounts. Appeal (yes/no + outcome): Appealed after moving money to new account and was approved July 2024.”
“Can you expand on what was the ‘right’ account vs the previous account?” – “It was an investment account. I think a lot of it was bs. They also didn’t accept the rental income.”
“So just to understand the funds were in an investment account and you had to transfers it to savings account? I have heard it of this.” – “Yes.”
“Thanks for this post! It is very helpful in getting tips and ideas! May i ask if there is anyone here who applied alone (eventhough married and with children) and got denied for the same reason?
To be honest it is a bit risky to give up your work and pay insurance policy and other fees but no assurance that your visa will be approved.”

Non Lucrative Visa Rejection: Key Lessons
Spain non-lucrative visa rejection is more common than many applicants expect, and the reasons can range from how funds are held to a single word choice in a letter of intent. This community discussion reveals that consulates vary significantly in what they accept, particularly regarding rental income and the type of bank account where savings are held.
Key patterns emerge from these experiences: gifted money may be flagged as “artificial funds,” investment accounts may not be accepted as proof of financial means, and some consulates do not recognize rental income at all. Verbal denials without official documentation can leave applicants unable to appeal or recover prepaid costs like health insurance.
Applicants should ensure their funds are in standard savings or current accounts, have their documentation carefully reviewed for language errors, and be prepared to reapply at a different consulate if needed. Understanding common NLV visa denial reasons can help future applicants avoid these pitfalls.
This article is based on personal opinions from the Spainguru community and is not legal advice.
Here is a simplified version of the cases in table form:
| Consulate | Income Source | Key Issue | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manchester (UK) | Gifted funds | Consulate considered the funds “artificial” | Reapplied through Edinburgh and approved |
| San Francisco (USA) | Short-term rental income | Wording in letter suggested property management (working in Spain) | Refused, no official denial document to appeal |
| Washington D.C. (USA) | Savings + rental income | Rental income not accepted and funds held in an investment account | Appealed after moving funds to savings account and approved |
Key takeaway: refusals often relate to how funds are presented (gifted money, investment accounts, rental income) or documentation wording, and requirements can vary significantly by consulate.
