DIY, consulate or legal representative — which route?
There’s no single “best” route. Some readers can absolutely handle a Spanish NIE themselves; others prefer support when there’s a property deadline, mortgage signing or bureaucratic hurdle in the way. Here’s a balanced comparison.
| What matters to you | Apply yourself (in Spain or consulate) | Use a legal representative (E-Residence) |
|---|---|---|
| Need to be in Spain? | Yes for in-Spain route. No for consular route — but in-person at consulate. | No — fully remote via Power of Attorney |
| Forms in Spanish (EX-15, Modelo 790 Código 012) | You complete them yourself | Handled for you, reviewed by lawyers |
| Booking the Cita Previa | You book it (waits of weeks/months in many cities) | Filed through accredited legal channels |
| Language barrier | Spanish required at the office | Full English support throughout |
| Cost | Only the official fee (~€10–€12) + travel | Service fee on top of the official fee |
| Refund if application refused | No refund — official fees are lost | 100% refund guarantee if your application is refused |
| Best for… | Applicants with time, Spanish skills and access to the right office or consulate. | Applicants abroad, property buyers, anyone with a tight notary, mortgage or bank deadline. |

Frequently asked questions
Can I get a Spanish NIE without travelling to Spain?
Yes. Applicants outside Spain can either visit the relevant Spanish Consulate in their country of residence, or use an authorised legal representative via a notarised Power of Attorney (Poder Notarial) with Hague Apostille. E-Residence operates the second route end-to-end.
Does E-Residence actually issue the NIE?
No. E-Residence is a private legal and administrative assistance provider. The NIE is assigned exclusively by the competent Spanish authority (Dirección General de la Policía). What E-Residence does is prepare the documents, file the EX-15 application and Modelo 790 Código 012 payment, represent you on the ground, and deliver the result once issued.
Can I apply for the NIE myself instead?
Absolutely. If you can attend the right office or Spanish Consulate, complete the forms in Spanish, manage the Cita Previa wait and handle follow-up yourself, DIY is a perfectly valid route. Many SpainGuru readers do exactly that. Use E-Residence when you can’t travel, when you have a property/bank/notary deadline, or when you simply prefer guided support.
What does the SpainGuru €10 discount apply to?
The promo code SPAINGURU gives you €10 off any E-Residence service at checkout — Basic, Priority or VIP Urgent NIE, plus NUSS, FNMT, autónomo, S.L. company, Beckham Law, Digital Nomad Visa or bank account. Just enter the code in the checkout form.
How long does the NIE process actually take?
E-Residence’s published service windows are 14–18 working days (Basic), 5–10 (Priority) and 3–5 (VIP Urgent). These are best-effort estimates based on their workload and standard authority response times. Final timing depends on the Spanish authorities and cannot be guaranteed by any private provider.
Do I need a NIE to buy property or open a Spanish bank account?
Yes for property purchases and most mortgage signings — the notary will require it. Bank accounts depend on the bank: some accept passport-only accounts initially, but a NIE is required for almost all longer-term Spanish banking activity, tax payments and utility contracts.
Why does the service fee cost more than the official administrative fee?
The two fees are completely separate. The official Spanish State fee (Modelo 790 Código 012) is around €10–€12 and goes to the government. E-Residence’s service fee covers document preparation, legal representation in Spain, the Power of Attorney workflow, follow-up with authorities, secure delivery and English-language support — not the NIE itself.
Is a NIE the same as residency?
No. The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is an identification number used in administrative, tax, property and banking procedures. It does not grant residence, a visa, work authorisation or the physical TIE card. Those are separate processes — and E-Residence can help with the Digital Nomad Visa and Beckham Law specifically.
Are my documents safe?
E-Residence is a registered legal firm (License No. 62802L) and processes documents under GDPR. Identity verification is done through a secure biometric step, and your data is handled by their compliance team.
