Can someone who has a British passport and British driving license have to take a driving test in Spain again?

Question

We are in the UK and  I might not have the right info. We are planning to move to Spain ( hopefully this year) does my husband who has British passport and British driving license have to take a driving test in Spain again? I heard there was a deadline last year to convert it, on the other hands that there are talks between UK and Spain to make an agreement, so no sure if it’s something for definite or its up in the air.

These are the answers of some Facebook group members:

“At the moment yes, but it might change”

“Current rules. yes, within 6 months of becoming resident.”

“I understand that you can still swop your driving licence if you register the intent within 6 months of becoming a resident. The driving test is for those that were resident but didn’t register their intent to exchange driving licence before the deadline!”

“He can drive 6 month with uk license then must take spanish test as things stand just now. Check DVLC before you leave .Talks are still on going as it stands at moment”

“You have 6 months but need to get residencia first as it’s required for the medical for exchanging licence.”
