What are the rules or requirements for buying a car in Spain?

Last Updated on March 18, 2026 by Bruno Bianchi

Question

What are the rules or requirements for buying a car in Spain? I am planning to buy one this summer and would like to know if I can as a visitor only for now.

My plan is to buy it and use it for 3 months while traveling through Europe and leaving it parked for me to use again in December when I return.

I will be paying cash for it…. in the USA anyone can buy a car in California and have it transferred with title to his name irrelevant of his emigration status.

Do I need just a NIE number? What are the rules? Do I need to be a resident to buy a car?

Answers

These are the answers of some Facebook group members:

“I needed an NIE and a rental contract. You may be able to have an agency or gestor manage it for you but as far as I understand you need some sort of address for your car tax bills to be sent.”

“It is definitely not as straightforward to buy a car here as it is in the states. Dealerships can’t take cash over a certain amount and it has to be done via bank transfer. I had to be registered with the hacienda (tax agency) to get all the paperwork finished. In all it was almost a 3 day process to receive the car after purchase.”

“You will need a NIE. You don’t need to be a resident.”

“Just an NIE number, possibly an address to register it to.”

“You can buy a car with proof of address and NIE. You will have to get insurance with your foreign license that’s valid for 6 months.”
