Question about the Spanish drivers license
I have lived in Barcelona for 4 years, and although I do not drive here, my driver’s license from the USA is set to expire in August. I want to convert it to a Spanish drivers license in case I want to rent a car here in the future. I cannot simply renew it back in the USA (or online) since I do not have an address there anymore. I went to the DGT website but it appears that the US does not have exchange privileges, as far as I can tell. Has anyone else done this before? Thanks!

Start the Moving to Spain Hub →“In reality after 6 months here you can’t drive here with your US driving license, you need to get a Spanish drivers license; if you had been driving with your usa one was like driving with no license and in case you were stooped you had been fired and in case of accident you could face penal charges”
“Yes, there is no right for US citizens to exchange the driver license (I’ve passed exams with a couple of Americans), so yes, you must a) pass the theory (can be in English), and the apply for the practical exam. Note that you can go to the theory exam without applying to any school (there are plenty of tests online), but for the practical exam you must do it via one of the driving schools.”
“Time to go to driver’s school. You are lucky you haven’t had a problem. If you get caught after 6 months residency without a Spanish license you would get a multa you can’t imagine if you run into la policía de mala leche.”
“I remember that my friend who is a USA citizen had to take an exam to get a Spanish licence, even when her US license was valid. That was ~4 years ago.”

Conclusion
In conclusion, according to Spainguru Facebook group members, it’s clear that converting a US driver’s license to a Spanish drivers license is essential for residents in Spain after the initial 6-month grace period. While there may not be exchange privileges for US citizens, obtaining a Spanish driver’s license through theory and practical exams is the recommended and legal path to follow to ensure compliance with local regulations and avoid potential penalties.
