Has anyone applied and received their US passport in Spain?

Last Updated on March 18, 2026 by Bruno Bianchi

Question

My passport is 8 months pass the expiration date. And I only realized this as I will have to fly to the UK in 5 weeks for business purposes. Has anyone applied and received their passport here in Spain? I would appreciate any info and the do’s and don’t do.

“I’ve renewed mine and applied for new passports for both my daughters in the last few years at the consulate (BCN) and it’s always arrived in a couple weeks. You can even request to pick it up from the consulate if you’re close to one and save you a couple days of mail time getting to you.”

“Did mine through the Embassy in Madrid, sent the photos and forms through Correos overnight with tracking number, they got it at 9am the next day, I had it back in my hands 2 weeks later. Super easy and efficient.”

“I did the paperwork online and mailed my passport with the requisite return envelope to the US Embassy in Madrid and had my new and old one back in a week”

“You can apply for an emergency travel one (purple) while your renewal is in process…we did this at US consulate in Barcelona”

“Go online to renew it, fill out relevant form, get photos done, pay, include everything they ask for, including old passport in envelope, send to US Embassy in Madrid via DHL tracking. It’s usually about 3 to 4 weeks. But you can probably expedite it if you send proof of upcoming trip.”

“I needed a replacement when my passport was stolen. Applied in person at US embassy in Madrid when they opened and had it in hand after lunch.”

“I submitted my application to the US Embassy in Madrid by mail and had the new one in two weeks. 2 to 3 weeks is the norm I think. Fill out the forms online and mail them in with your old passport. Link to Passport Services of the US Embassy in Spain

“Contact your local consulate. I was able to get my daughter’s passport renewed in 6 days earlier this year in Palma…”
