Question
I am an EU citizen (Irish) but my wife and children are not (UK). When we arrive at Spanish airports from the UK can my non-EU family come with me through the EU channel at passport control?
I’m sure I read somewhere that family groups should stay together but I can no longer find any clear answer on this.
Answers
These are the answers of some Facebook group members:
”No. When anyone in the family is none, the entire group will pass as none. I know it from mixed families from Latin America”
”If you live in Spain then use the EU Queue. If you don’t live in Spain use the Non-EU Queue If your Wife and kids don’t have a resident card they’ll require a Stamp”
”Non-EU for them an EU for you mate they won’t be excepted at EU Cannel sadly they will get refused and then will have to go back at the end of the line in non-EU especially if there Brits I work at the airport see it everyday”
”Just for reference. EU queue is only for EU citizens and they do not have any system available for NON EU citizens. they must need this for checking NON-EU citizens, so it takes much longer and is complicated. But, NON-EU queue is for NON-EU citizens and EU citizens. So, if mixed, better go to the EU queue”
”I’m Irish so I just go through the non eu too”
”Before hubby was EU citizen he always had to go through his gate because he needed stamps/visas”
”I think if you are married and have married documentation I’ll be okay”
”We have exactly the same situation.. one adult Irish passport, and the other adult and 2 kids are UK. We just all go through the All Passports section. 3 gets a stamp and the other doesn’t. Same counter”
”I have EU and my wife has US, she always accompanies me to the EU line. We both go up together, I hand my passport and say This is my wife who hands over her US. Hers gets stamped, mine does not. No problem”
”I’m a Brit but always go through the EU queue in Spain with my missus, never been an issue”
”Yes, you can. If you hold an EU passport your spouse can follow the sale line. I’m in the same situation and avoid long waiting times this way. We always have our marriage certificate at hand though”
”We have Dutch passports, no passport control when we enter Spain and only check is at check-in when leaving”
”Thanks for all the answers that everyone has given. It seems there is no clear answer to this. I’m flying to Malaga soon so on this occasion I’ll just join the Non-EU queue just in case. Thanks again”
Conclusion
In conclusion, according to Spainguru Facebook group members, the question of whether non-EU family members can go through the EU channel at passport control when travelling with an EU citizen seems to lack a clear and consistent answer. Some travellers have reported success in using the EU channel, while others advise using the non-EU queue, particularly if family members lack certain documentation. The best approach may depend on individual circumstances and airport policies, so it’s advisable to carry relevant documents like marriage certificates and be prepared to use the non-EU queue if necessary.
