What is the recommended approach and timeline for a UK freelancer applying for the Digital Nomad Visa in Spain through the Spanish embassy, considering factors like using a lawyer, costs, initial steps, document translations, and suitability of the employment setup?

1. If applying through the Spanish embassy in London, how long does this whole process take?

Answers

These are the answers of some Facebook group members:

‘’1. It should take 20 working days. 2. Easier, safer, possibily cheaper than the consulate and much less frustrating than via an Immigration lawyer or specialists who MUST have successful DN experience. 3. That varies a lot from 1200-2500€ 4. No, get the A1 first, then ACRO police back ground check 5. Not everything. Not bank statements, invoices, etc. 6. Some people have, but it not only a language issue, it is trying to understand Spanish paperwork. 7. If you are an employee of your own company it will be a lot easier. A 6 month contract = 6 month visa/residency’’

‘’I’ve applied for maximum 2 years a1 from hmrc. I’ve been advised that technically beyond the 2 years NO dnv unless you get a1 extended so Beckham tax law will finish as wel’’

Conclusion

According to Spainguru’s Facebook group members, for UK freelancers seeking Spain’s DNV, applying directly to the embassy takes about 20 days and is more cost-effective than involving lawyers (1200-2500€). Secure an A1 certificate, ACRO police check, and consider a maximum 2-year A1 from HMRC.

Being an employee of your own company aids the process, aligning with a 6-month contract for visa/residency. Extension may be required beyond two years due to Beckham tax law.
