Can I change my NIE student permit to a Spanish non lucrative residence permit before it expires?

Last Updated on March 18, 2026 by Bruno Bianchi

Question

Is it possible to modify a NIE student permit to a non-lucrative residence permit, and can this be done before the NIE student permit expires in June?

Answers

These are the answers of some Facebook group members:

‘’I think you have to apply for Spanish non lucrative residence permit from your home country’’

‘’Wherever you are currently resident, you can apply for the Spanish non lucrative residence permit. Start the paperwork if you’re ready to’’

‘’I believe you can apply from Spain since that is currently your county of residence. You still need to meet the financial requirements though’’

‘’NALCAP if that does not work. Good luck! Get another study maybe an Formacion profesional but I think this is in Spanish’’

‘’You apply from your country of residence, problem you have is student visa is estancia not residencial, so you are still resident in your home country. You say you’ve been here a year, have you completed your course (certified) if so you can modify before your current expires to looking for work, or if you have work offer to work visa. But this must be applied for modification b4 your current expires. Failing that renew. But no you cannot apply for nlv from Spain. Must be your country of residence’’

Conclusion

Conclusion, According to Spainguru Facebook group members, the feasibility of changing a NIE student permit to a non-lucrative residence permit is subject to various factors. Suggestions include applying from your home country or exploring the possibility from Spain, contingent on meeting financial requirements.

Considerations such as the student visa category (estancia) and the completion of a certified course impact the process. It’s advisable to consult immigration authorities or seek professional guidance to navigate these complexities and explore potential modifications before the student permit expires.
