Question
“I have been told that as a UK pensioner I can transfer my health service provision from the NHS to the Spanish Health Service using form S1. Is this correct and if so am I correct in thinking I do not need to take out private health insurance for the Spain Non Lucrative Visa application?”
Answers
These are the answers of Spainguru’s Facebook group members:
“Yes, it’s correct.”
“You can ring up NHS and get an S1 if you are already residing in Spain or will be within the next 90 calendar days. S1 can be emailed to you and a hard copy sent to your UK address. In addition to yourself, it is also possible to get the same level of cover for your spouse, who would be classified as your dependent.”
“Is that even if your dependent is younger and not yet retirement age?” – “I’ve just turned 66 and qualified for UK pension. My lovely toy girl wife is 51 and is fully covered by my S1.
We’ve applied for our NLV visa out of London and are advised all documentation relating to my / our S1 is acceptable and that we will not be required to provide any evidence of private medical cover.”
“yes, fill out the form on the gov.uk website to get the ball rolling.”
Conclusion
For UK pensioners, the S1 form provides a way to transfer NHS health service coverage to the Spanish Health Service when becoming residents in Spain, negating the need for private health insurance.
The form covers both the pensioner and their dependent spouse, even if the spouse is younger and not of retirement age, providing a seamless transition of healthcare benefits under the Spain non-lucrative visa.
