Question
“As part of the Spain Non Lucrative Visa application at the consulate, are you asked to provide a P45 to show you aren’t working anymore? If I get approved for the visa then I will quit my job but I wouldn’t want to quit until I know it was going to be approved. If you are asked, is there any advice?”
Answers
These are the answers of Spainguru’s Facebook group members:
“I had to provide a P45 last week so had to pack my job in obviously a few weeks before my appointment; a letter from my employer would not do, and the same for my wife.”
“What is a P45?” – “It’s a form you get after you finish your job that you have to take to prove you are not working. It has your tax details on it, your code, how much you’ve paid, the date you left your employment, etc.”
“Don’t think it works like that, to apply for the NLV you need to apply with a P45 as you’re not working. I could be wrong..!!”
“What country is this that you get a P45? The companies in the US don’t give you any such form.” – “UK.”

“You have to prove you have already stopped working. I was given a career break of 12 months and had a letter from my employer stating this. I wanted to keep my options open in case I wanted to return to the UK.
I had to resign and get proof to them via a P45 or statement from my tax record. It was a worry at the time, but I’ve been in Spain since October last year and am loving it. This is my home now. I applied via Manchester consulate.”
“A P45 is one way but so is a letter from your employer stating you have resigned and will leave on xx date.”
“Definitely need a P45. We went to Manchester BLS in June; my husband needed his P45 and I needed a letter from HMRC to say I had ceased trading. Received visas 14 working days later 👍.”
“Use the search bar at the top try putting P45 & get previous replies…”
“If you have a clean police report, have medical insurance and the correct funds then you won’t be refused the visa. It’s a simple checklist. Good luck.”
“If you’re applying from the UK you have to produce a P45.”
“I was not asked for my P45 but got my visa.”
Conclusion
The requirement to quit your job and provide a P45 as part of the Spain non lucrative visa application varies depending on the consulate.
In some cases, like in the UK, applicants might be required to show a P45 to prove they have ceased employment.
Alternatively, a letter from the employer or other documents might suffice, depending on specific consulate requirements.
It’s crucial to confirm with the specific consulate what documents are necessary before making any significant decisions like quitting a job.
