Spain Non Lucrative Visa: Options for Obtaining Compliant Health Insurance

Last Updated on April 18, 2026 by Bruno Bianchi

Question

“We are applying for an NLV visa at BLS in October 2024. In the application, we mentioned that our expected date of arrival in Spain is April 2024. When we inquired about purchasing insurance, we were informed that they can only sell insurance within 90 days before the effective date. This means our insurance would be valid starting from February 2025. Typically, the insurance is renewed annually.

How can we buy insurance to cover the duration of our NLV visa (from April 2025 to April 2026) since October 2024 to be able to submit Insurance certificate for our NLV application? Can we buy insurance for 2 years renewal instead of 1 year renewal?

“We ran into this issue. We applied in August with our insurance effective in January; this was as far out as we could get. We used Gidea as a broker after being told no by every company. They were able to get us on with DKV five months out.

For pre-existing conditions, they exclude them from coverage but write that everything is covered in the letter you provide to the consulate. It’s the underwriting part that excludes pre-existing. This enables them to issue insurance to those with pre-existing conditions; otherwise, only people with no medical history would be eligible for the visa.

Even with five months out, you’d still be short if applying six months out, but that’s usually okay with the consulate.

At renewal, you’ll end up renewing your insurance about three months before expiration. The letters also say policies auto-renew, so the consulates don’t care if you’re “short” by a month or so.”

“It’s very helpful with your detailed information. I will contact them to see how they can help. Thank you very much!”

“Carlos Blanco, an exclusive agent for Adeslas, can postpone the insurance start date. Here’s the link: Adeslas Health Insurance Options.

For other brokers, here’s a link for non-binding quotes from top health insurance companies in Spain (ASSSA, DKV, Asisa, Adeslas, Sanitas, and more). All are fully compliant with NLV requirements (no copay, no waiting times, full coverage). You can get immediate quotes after submitting online forms: SpainGuru Health Insurance Options.”

“Thank you very much for your helpful information! I will contact Adeslas!”

Conclusion

Obtaining compliant health insurance for the Spain Non Lucrative Visa can be challenging due to timing restrictions, especially since many insurers only offer policies within 90 days of the start date.

Brokers and exclusive agents for insurers such as Adeslas can often offer solutions, such as advance issuance or deferred start dates, which help applicants meet visa requirements.

Many recommend consulting a broker, especially for policies that require flexibility around health requirements and start dates.
