Spain Non Lucrative Visa: Switching Health Insurance Providers Before Renewal

Last Updated on April 18, 2026 by Bruno Bianchi

Question

Has anyone switched from one private health insurance to another before their Spain Non Lucrative Visa renewal? I’m not due to submit my renewal until Feb/March 2025 but am considering switching due to coverage limitations where I live—would appreciate any tips from anyone who has done so. Thanks in advance for any help!

“As long as it meets the requirements, you can insure with anyone. The new policy would need to cover the 2 years of your visa.”

“I know people who have switched, and it was fine. Just check the terms of your existing policy because some may automatically renew if you don’t give notice.”

“I successfully switched from Sanitas to Adeslas before my year 2 and 3 NLV renewal. Make sure you have over a month to cancel the existing policy once the new one is accepted.”

“You can certainly change. I have many clients who have done this. It’s essential to ensure there’s no gap between policies, so one ends at midnight and the new one starts at 12:01 to maintain continuous coverage.”

Switching health insurance providers before renewing a Spain Non Lucrative Visa is a common process for those seeking better coverage or service.

Key considerations include ensuring the new policy meets visa requirements, verifying no lapse in coverage between policies, and checking existing policy terms to avoid automatic renewals.

Many expats find improved coverage by switching to providers that are well-regarded in their specific regions, such as DKV, Sanitas, or Adeslas.
