“We picked door number three, Bruno, and chose retirement,” Michael said. A financial planner confirmed they could retire, and the search for a country began.
Before choosing where to go, the couple sat down together and wrote their top five non-negotiables. The most important was living somewhere that legally recognized their same-sex marriage, which ruled out the Philippines despite its low cost of living.

“She actually stepped back and thought about this, and I saw the wheels clicking,” he recalled. The officer reconsidered, then declined. Offered only the choice to obtain a residence visa or withdraw, he withdrew.
The refusal was never issued as a formal written denial; it was communicated verbally. The stated reason was that a Spanish residence visa cannot be issued against a non-resident, tourist status, because applicants must apply at a consulate within the jurisdiction where they can prove residency.
As US citizens, Michael and Jess realized they could apply from the United States without the residency constraints they had hit in Australia. Jess’s sister lived in Miami, Florida, with an apartment and a car they could use, and the Miami consulate was moving at a good pace.

Having enrolled in US health insurance, Michael went for a standard medical. “Lo and behold, they found that I had three blockages and I was completely asymptomatic. I go to the gym four days a week,” he said.
He was admitted, and the next day, on 12 June, he underwent bypass surgery. The couple released their NLV appointment so they would not block another applicant’s slot that day, and he went into surgery with a clear conscience.
