I have friends who want to come to Spain. They are in their 80s and have mobility issues. Will they be able to get the Spain Non Lucrative Visa?

“They will need to provide their own health insurance for the 1st year, if applying for a Spain Non Lucrative Visa. It is very pricey at their age and with their conditions. Expect premium to be several thousand per month per couple.

We are healthy and in our 70s and had difficulty finding anything for less than $30,000 to $40,000 for the two of us for one year. The health insurance has to mirror the Spanish government insurance for that first year. This must be presented and paid for when they have their appointment at the Spanish consulate.”

“$30,000 for the 1st year, and some quotes were higher.”

“Do you have to stay in private insurance after the first year? Or did price go down after that?” – “After the 1st year, state insurance.”

“You obviously looked in the wrong places! I only pay €1,000/year.”

“Nobody I know including myself pays that much.”

“I’m so confused, I heard before that it was 200-300 per month per person, which would be more like 5-7,000 for 2 people in a year. That 30,000-40,000 number was surprising.”

“Obviously depends on the policy and what it covers, but definitely not those crazy amounts!”

“They don’t need private insurance if they are British. Pensioners fill out an S1 form to qualify for NHS funding.”

“Sorry. I guess we all need to assume not everyone is from the US. I was referring to US citizens. We all need to state which country we are from when asking a question. The info is all on the Spanish embassy website.”

“What insurance are you using! Those prices are way too high. We have checked with a lot of health insurance companies and we are a family of 3, with one over 70, one over 60 and one in the 30’s, with pre-existing conditions and the highest quote has been $6,000 per year. Oh, and we are in the U.S. as well.”

“We have received numerous quotes. We are both in our 70’s. That was the key… that we are over 70. we found just a few companies that would even insure over 70. Note: we are US citizens applying for a Spain Non Lucrative Visa with the Spanish embassy. There are specific requirements for the first year, before we will be accepted with the Spanish health.

The insurance has to mirror the Spanish health…we are not able to use our own private insurance, because it requires a deductible… the policy had to have repatriation in the clause during year one… Since we have contacted every single company in Spain that offers the insurance, and have spoken to numerous people applying the same way, we have found nothing else. I am not making this up.”

“I believe you, but that seems like a wrong number. We’re also in the U.S. applying for an NLV, from the Spanish consulate in Miami, and for my husband over 70 years old, with pre-existing conditions, the most expensive was 2,795 euros a year with ASSSA, and it complies with the NLV requirements, and that price is with the Master plan (they have 2 that are less expensive that also comply with the NLV health insurance requirements).

I just feel bad for you and feel like someone is taking advantage. Try talking to ASSSA, they insure up to 79 years old. Sanitas also insures up to 74 years old and the quote given to us was about 1,800 euros per year for my 70+ year old husband.”

Conclusion

The discussion highlights the challenges older adults face when applying for the Spain Non Lucrative Visa, particularly in securing affordable health insurance.

Costs can vary widely depending on the provider and personal circumstances, and navigating these expenses is crucial for successful application.
