Question
Our family is excited to start the process of Spain Digital Nomad Visa. We are coming from the U.S. We are meeting with an international CPA this week to help us figure out what to do with our business but maybe someone else has done this. We own a business together (LLC, S-corp. status) so we are paid as W-2 employees for tax purposes in the U.S. Anyone have to ‘undo’ this in order to qualify for the DNV?”
Answers
These are the answers of Spainguru’s Spain Digital Nomad Visa group members:
“As the USA doesn’t have a certificate of coverage that’s acceptable to Spain for the Spain Digital Nomad Visa, you either will need to register the business to pay social security in Spain or to become a freelancer and undertake to sign up as self-employed once the visa is granted.
The first option isn’t usually a very popular one due to costs. Both set up costs and ongoing costs.”
Conclusion
For U.S. business owners operating under LLC and S-Corp structures looking to qualify for the Spain Digital Nomad Visa, significant adjustments may be necessary.
Since the U.S. lacks a certificate of coverage acceptable to Spain, applicants often need to choose between registering their business in Spain or transitioning to a freelancer status.
Both options involve considerations related to setup and ongoing operational costs, making it essential to plan thoroughly and seek specialized financial and legal advice.
