Work Permit in Spain: Key 2025 Visa Changes for Students & Auxiliares de Conversación

Last Updated on May 19, 2026 by Bruno Bianchi

What’s Changing?

According to updates in Article 190 of Spain’s immigration law, students enrolled in programs longer than six months can currently modify their student visas to Work Permit in Spain. However, starting on May 20th 2025, this modification will no longer be possible for certain categories, including Auxiliares de Conversación and Students of Spanish or other official languages in Spain:

This change stems from a detailed interpretation of Article 52, which outlines which types of students qualify for visa modification. Unfortunately, auxilares de conversación and Spanish language students (1º and 2º) fall outside the eligible categories.

What Should You Do?

If you are currently in one of these roles and want to stay in Spain legally after your program ends, act now! Here’s how:

  1. Modify Your Visa Before May 2025:
If you’ve completed just one auxiliar or language program, you can apply for a work permit now.
  2. Explore Alternative Permits:
Consider high-skilled visas, entrepreneur visas, or even the digital nomad visa if applicable. These paths follow different regulations.
  3. Consider Arraigo Social (Social Roots Permit):
If you can’t modify your visa, another option is applying for Arraigo Social after staying continuously in Spain for two years. However, you must not exceed 90 days outside Spain during this time.

Why Consult an Expert?

Given the complexity of Spain’s immigration laws, consulting an experienced immigration lawyer is essential. Tailored advice can help you understand which path fits your unique situation.

Final Thoughts

These changes are significant, and time is running out. If staying in Spain is your goal, start your modification process as soon as possible or explore alternative visa options.
