Question
For the Spain Digital Nomad Visa application, does anyone know about the health insurance requirements? My question is: is it possible to submit your application without an insurance contract? The insurances companies I contacted won’t reimburse you if you don’t get your visa…Thanks”
Answers
These are the answers of Spainguru’s Spain Digital Nomad Visa group members:
“If you are self-employed, then you only need to sign an undertaking that you will register as autonomo. You don’t need to provide insurance for the visa. If you are employed with an A1 and an S1, then it’s likely the S1 will be accepted. You don’t need health insurance.
However, do be aware that there is usually a few months between arriving and being able to access the public health system, so you may want to think about some coverage.”
“I’m Canadian and self-employed. My only client is a Canadian company and I don’t intend to work for a Spanish company since this contract is full time. I will still be paying my taxes in Canada. In that case, I think that I don’t need to register as an autonomous worker in Spain. But for the visa application, is it a requirement to submit proof of insurance?”
“With that setup, you will be paying taxes and social security in Spain. It’s part of the requirements for the visa. You will need to be in Spain at least 183 days a year to fulfill your visa commitment making you tax resident. You will need to submit a letter undertaking to sign up to Spanish social once you have the visa with your visa application.
Template: Here’s an example of letter promising to join the Social Security in Spain:
En (City) a (Date)
Por la presente, yo, Don/Dña. ______________ de nacionalidad (Citizenship), provisto/a de pasaporte nº _ y NIE _ mediante el presente documento digo:
“Que declaro mi compromiso de darme de alta en la Seguridad Social de España como trabajador autónomo (RETA) una vez obtenida la autorización de residencia y antes del comienzo del trabajo”.

YOUR NAME
As self-employed, this is mandatory wherever your clients are based. If you then don’t follow through and register the Spanish government eventually will start taking proceedings to cancel your visa. You don’t need private health insurance and you can’t use it as a substitute for paying Spanish social security.”
“As far as I know, my referrals will all reimburse if the visa is denied. Please confirm individually. In terms of health insurance, here you can get non binding quotes from the top health insurance companies in Spain (ASSSA, DKV, Asisa, Adeslas, Sanitas, Salus, etc.) and all are fully compliant with any Spanish visa requirements (0 copay, 0 waiting times, full coverage). Get your quotes immediately right after filing the online form: https://spainguru.es/health-insurance-for-spain-non-lucrative-visa/ “
“does regular health insurance in the states suffice? Instead of “travel insurance”?” – “first of all you need to understand your employment status and confirm that you need a health insurance in Spain. If you need a health insurance in Spain it needs to comply with the conditions that I have described before. Foreign health insurances are not recommended because they can be deemed not to be compliant because of several reasons.”
Conclusion
The discussion clarifies that health insurance may not be required for all applicants of the Spain Digital Nomad Visa, particularly those who are self-employed with foreign clients and intend to register with Spanish social security. However, for those who may not qualify under specific conditions, having some form of health coverage is advisable due to the waiting period for accessing public health services in Spain.
