Question about non lucrative Spain visa Spanish health insurance

Does anyone know how far in advance you should start reviewing health insurance policies for the non lucrative Spain visa? Six months? Three months? Also, do you recommend going through a broker or contacting companies directly?

“How ever long it takes you to typically make a decision- once you contact them to apply, it is about 1-2 weeks. I found I had to ask them to hold up a bit with the process, since it moved quicker than I expected. I started 1-2 months early. Another thing is the rate will be good until a certain date. If you apply to soon and get the rates too soon, they may change by the time you actually need it.”

“I would certainly go through a broker (someone who works with multiple insurance companies) or an agent (someone who works with one insurance company). You pay the same price (their fee is a commission, but you don’t pay more for that), but you get the benefit of their advice (in English) and support while you have the policy.”

“Our interview was October and we were advised to start in august, remember you have to pay for it for a year as they don’t like monthly contracts.”

“I would say 1.5 months ahead of time so you’ll have plenty of time to pick the one that works best for you. Besides comparing prices I would advice to check how many services each company offers in the area you’re moving to.. I signed a year contract which is the requirement but I make a monthly payment.”

“Start reviewing them as early as possible. Many have up to a 10 month waiting period for hospitalizations and expensive tests making them virtually worthless for the first year. There’s a couple of ways around this. One is to work with a broker who can find you a plan without waiting periods. Another strategy is to buy a policy well in advance of your arrival. There’s also the issue of pre-existing conditions, so allow yourself lots of time to shop around and study the policies carefully. I always prefer using brokers for insurance so you have somebody who’s watching out for your interests.”
