Moving from the UK to Spain for Health Reasons

Last Updated on March 18, 2026 by Bruno Bianchi

Question

I’m looking at selling up and moving from the UK to Spain. We are a married couple in our late 50s, approximately 5 months ago my wife was diagnosed with a rare form of arthritis (CAD) and the cold makes it more painful so the cold and wet UK is obviously not the best.

I’m looking for other ex-pats who have moved over and could give us advice as it looks like a minefield.

“Areas around Alicante like Javea, Altea, Elche should be good for your wife since she needs dry heat. Consider turmeric supplements or glucosamine for anti-inflammatory benefits.”

“For those under retirement age, be aware that private health insurance is required which covers appointments and tests but not medications. Medications, especially biologics for arthritis, can be very costly.”

“Grand Canaria has no winters like Mainland Spain, which might be preferable for chasing the sun.”

“You will need to apply for a Visa. The Spanish Non-lucrative visa (NLV) might be the best option if you are not planning to work. There are services that offer free consultations to help with the visa process.”

“Living in a warmer climate can significantly improve arthritis symptoms. A better diet in Spain also helps.”

“Consider natural medicine and join relevant Facebook groups for more health tips.”

“Some expats find that hot weather doesn’t necessarily improve arthritis conditions as expected. It’s a myth that hot weather always helps.”

“Plan a trial visit to your preferred area in Spain to assess the impact of weather on arthritis. Weather systems vary, and some areas can be damp and cold.”

“Consult with immigration experts that assist with visas and relocation, especially if you’re aiming for areas like Costa Blanca which offers a great expat community, restaurants, and a lower cost of living.”

“Health insurance is a critical consideration due to visa requirements and the fact that pre-existing conditions are generally not covered.”

“Investigate legal and visa requirements thoroughly, as the process has become more complicated post-Brexit.”

“Warm weather can help with arthritis, and medical care in Spain is very good. However, you will need a Non-Lucrative Visa and private health care, and you must have sufficient passive income.”

Conclusion:

Moving from the UK to Spain for health reasons, particularly to seek a warmer climate for conditions like arthritis, requires careful planning around location, health care, and legal requirements.

The consensus among expats is that while a warmer climate can offer significant relief, considerations around humidity, health insurance, medication costs, and visa requirements should not be underestimated.

Areas around Alicante and Grand Canaria are recommended for their climates, but personal trials are advised.

The Spanish Non-lucrative Visa emerges as a popular option for those not intending to work, with a clear need for private health insurance and awareness of the financial implications for medication and treatments.
