Spain Digital Nomad Visa Renewal: Income Requirements and Employment Changes

Last Updated on April 18, 2026 by Bruno Bianchi

Question

What are the visa income/employment maintenance rules during your 3-year Spain Digital Nomad Visa? What happens if you get approved for a 3-year Spain Digital Nomad Visa and after that your work contract changes/is terminated and your new income/client contract is lower than that of the visa application requirements? Do you have a certain amount of time to leave the country? Would you get rejected after your 3 years at renewal?

“If at renewal time you cannot meet the original requirements, then you won’t get an approval. Once the original authorization has expired, you will be allowed to remain in Spain as a tourist, if your passport allows you to do so without a prior tourist visa, and for as long as you have Schengen days available.”

“What if at renewal time you’re back to the original requirements or have now exceeded but during the 3 years your income fluctuated and was sometimes beneath the original requirements?”

“Supposedly, they won’t check actual income invoiced during the three years, but they will check you are up to date with SS and tax payments.”

“Sorry, I am not sure. In my opinion, you must match their requirement again; they don’t care about the situation during the 3 years.”

Conclusion

For holders of the Spain Digital Nomad Visa (DNV), maintaining the income requirements set at the initial application is crucial for renewal after three years. If income falls below the required threshold during the visa period, it may not impact the current status, provided all social security and tax obligations are met.

However, for renewal, applicants must again meet or exceed the initial income requirements. Fluctuations during the visa term are less important than the financial situation at the time of renewal.

hose unable to meet these requirements at the time of renewal may not be able to extend their stay under the digital nomad visa.
