Question
The BLS website is a little unclear about some Spain Non Lucrative Visa requirements.
You need to pay the 790-052 form, but how? Can you just use a credit card in the office when you go for your appointment?
Why does BLS keep advertising travel insurance if applicants are supposed to have full coverage insurance? Does this have anything to do with the visa, or is this just a travel requirement? It kind of smells like a scam to me.
Answers
These are the answers of Spainguru’s Facebook group members:
“Because BLS also processes tourist visas.”
“The Miami consulate incorrectly mentions the American Translators Association on their official NLV page, even though this organization has no connection to the sworn translators required for the process. This is completely misleading.
Similarly, BLS misleads applicants by referencing travel health insurance, when in reality, you need an NLV-compliant full coverage health insurance policy to apply successfully, and a travel health insurance would lead to visa denial.”
“Ok, that’s the same BLS we are using, and they accept debit card only for payments. You pay at your appointment when you hand in your application and paperwork.”
“You need a year’s health insurance in Spain. Not the same as travel insurance. Fill out the 790 form and give them a money order for the amount required. Ours in San Francisco was $151. Money order only! BLS may charge for other services, these are payable by credit card. We had to pay a processing fee, but we did not use any of the other services.”
“Private health insurance doesn’t include travel insurance, but that’s nothing to do with BLS and is a separate issue. Tasa 790-052 is filled in and paid at your appointment along with the visa fees.”
“Miami BLS keeps advertising on the site that travel insurance is necessary ‘for the entire duration of your stay,’ which sounds absurd? Surely if we need travel insurance, it would only be for the trip itself since we have health insurance in Spain?”
“Regarding them advertising this a lot, I mean, why are they pushing travel insurance before we even have a visa? I understand that it will be refunded if we’re denied, but it seems irrelevant for the visa application and expensive for what it is.”
“You won’t need travel insurance to get the Spain non lucrative visa. They do seem to be peddling it on the side, but don’t worry, it’s not a visa requirement. You just need health insurance from a Spanish insurer for an entire year, effective date around your intended arrival, without copays, etc.”
Conclusion
According to Spainguru’s Facebook group members, the payment method for the 790-052 fee depends on the specific BLS office. In Miami, it is paid via debit card at the appointment, while other offices may require money orders or other payment methods.
As for travel insurance, while Miami BLS heavily promotes it, it is not necessary for a Spain non lucrative visa. Applicants need full health insurance from a Spanish provider, covering the entire year, without copays. The promotion of travel insurance appears to be a side business rather than an actual visa requirement.
