“Bank statements don’t have to be translated. My husband had to show a letter regarding his private pension to confirm how much he got.”

“We did not get our bank statements translated. This was for a long-term study visa so we didn’t need tax documents. We did have the background check translated. We had a bilingual medical statement signed and stamped by the doctor on office letterhead.

We had the proof of insurance in Spanish and English directly from Sanitas and a few other things that don’t apply since the visa is different. If you speak Spanish, do so at the consulate with the first guy you see—he is nice and will joke with you.”

(Lawyers answer) “I always translate them because I don’t want the approval to be delayed. It is true that sometimes it’s very clear, but it’s not the first time the consulate has asked me to translate them. I do translations of the full documents, not just the summary pages but everything.”

Conclusion

According to Spainguru’s Facebook group members, bank statements are generally accepted as valid proof of pension deposits for the Spanish Non Lucrative Visa. However, whether they need to be translated depends on the specific consulate handling your application.

Some members report that their consulates accepted English bank statements without issue, especially when the financial information was easy to interpret. Others, including legal experts, recommend translating the entire document—not just the summary—to avoid potential delays or rejections.

It’s also worth noting that some applicants were asked to provide an official letter from their pension provider in addition to the statements. Other documents, such as background checks or medical certificates, also require sworn translation depending on the visa type or consulate preferences.

To be on the safe side and ensure a smoother application process, many applicants choose to translate their financial documents, even when it might not be strictly required.
