Question
We’re in the process of selling our home to move out to Spain on a non lucrative Spain visa, we have answers to most things, but I’m now worrying as I keep seeing horror stories of there being no jobs… We will need to work to some extent so thought I’d ask on here what the job front is like.
We plan to come out on non lucrative visas. And have a year exploring before making any big decisions. Then after the year move to working visa and buy a property. We speak basic Spanish which is improving and would like to think it would improve more once out there

These are the answers of some Facebook group members:
“Personally I wouldn’t sell until you have been out there for a while and know that your plan is going to work. Otherwise you may not be able to afford to go back. Happened to us only we were lucky but our home cost us an extra $200,000 when we came back to USA instead.”
“I’m sure it depends on what passport and what visa you move to Spain with”
“you will need ome Spanish unless you’re in a strictly Ex-pat community, where jobs May be a bit more scare. Also, do you hold EU passport or have a work permit for Spain? Teaching English is always one job which is fairly easy but still need a little Spanish and at least a TEFL or preferably a CELTA.”
“if you can learn some Spanish you can find work. If not you need to stay in an expat area where your be competing with locals and expats for work. It also depends on what work your after. Anything is possible if you think it is. Just research loads and if you haven’t got the skills that are in need then learn some. My podcast has job links and where to find jobs.”
“a friend of mine is doing the same. He is now at the beginning of year 2 and applying for a work permit as a builder. He has been told that it will be tricky.
Luckily he has a secondary trade/business in mind if he can’t get a work permit as a builder.”
“I read that a lot of people who are changing to a working Visa from NLV are getting refused .Ask on here maybe for people who have done it”
“I went over hoping to work in healthcare thinking loads of ex pats will be loads of work ended up coming back to uk as just so difficult with all the paperwork and legality”
“Sadly if you hold a UK passport it is very difficult to come to Spain and work straight away, even if you can find a job!! If you come over on a non lucrative visa, you can possibly move to a working/self employed visa for year 2 but it certainly isn’t easy….”
“If you are still a citizen of the EU and not a third country national. It will be easy for you to live and work in another EU country. If a third country national, it’s very, very difficult to live and work in another EU country legally.”
“What is your skill set you will need to apply for your visa to work here first… and if you do come here make sure you are mortgage free as work is not guaranteed and self employed social security/ taxes are high too.”
“Loads of catering jobs, can’t get the staff at the moment, presuming it’s due to Brexit as students can’t just come over now for summer jobs”
“Loads of work if you speak Spanish and have the right skills. If you can’t speak the language then you will struggle as you would in any country.”
