Question
Why does the Spanish nationality application require copies of passport pages, and if I get a new passport, how will they track my time outside Spain for residency requirements?

These are the answers of some Facebook group members:
”You would provide copies of your new passport. They want to see your movements to ensure you’re actually living here. I don’t understand your reticence to showing a full copy of your passport”
”You need all pages since you moved here or for the duration required. If you got a new passport, you have to show all the pages of the previous one as well. If you lost it… that’s even worse from what I’ve heard. You’ll need to show receipts and prove to them you were here during that time. Ive heard that it can really delay your application if you go that route”
”They’ll look at the entry and exit stamps. They can tell if you get a new one, because they’ll see the issue date on it. That’s why passports have an issue date on them. If you don’t provide the previous one, it’s much harder to prove you’ve stayed here the required amount of time”
”They can’t know if you’ve been out of Spain, only if out of the Schengen area. In any case, the passport I used to get the visa got wet by accident and had to travel so got an emergency one, I asked a lawyer and was told it was best to just scan them both”
”I believe they are often scanned as you enter and leave as well. Even if you don’t have a stamp, they will have a record of you”
”If you get a new passport, you will need to have copies of all pages of both your old and new passports. They use it to determine how many days you spent in Spain”
”I have different case than yours, but even though i was not applying for Nationality, i applied for Residencia permanente instead, i had to show copies of my passport that i just renewed last year, and i did not have to show copies of my old passport. I don’t know but sometimes dfferent Communidad asks for different things, it is better to see a lawyer if you can afford one they will provide you with clear-cut answer”
”They need the pages to check whether you were in or out. And they absolutely do go through them all; my MIL had a residency renewal get delayed for a while when there was a mixup (she’s a dual national and used one to enter and the other one to exit, so the dates didn’t match up correctly)”
Conclusion
in conclusion, according to Spainguru Facebook group members, to secure Spanish nationality or residency, providing passport copies is crucial. These records help track your time in Spain and are vital for verifying your stay duration. Getting a new passport may require copies of both old and new ones to prove your residency accurately. Overall, these copies are fundamental for a smooth application process and meeting residency requirements in Spain.
