Question
We are considering relocating to Spain, but our oldest child is 18. Can she come with us as a dependent? I am googling but not getting a clear answer.
Answers
These are the answers of Spainguru’s Facebook group members:
“Yes, you can bring your child. Our two teens (17 and 18) came with us.”
“Yes, just need to prove she is dependent, which shouldn’t be too hard for most 18-year-olds!”
“Yes, if you can prove financial dependency and that the child is part of your family (not married). Please check your consulate’s official requirements.”
“If she’s in education, you can bring her as a dependent, usually up to the age of 21.”
“There is no age limit. Our 30+ year-old daughter applied with us and was approved. You just need to provide:
- An apostilled single status certificate.
- Proof that the child is listed as a dependent on your taxes.
- Evidence that you pay for their health insurance.
The dependent does not need to have developmental disabilities or other conditions, just the documentation mentioned above. This was through the Miami consulate.”
“Just keep her on your payroll!”
Conclusion
Yes, your 18-year-old child can be considered a dependent when relocating to Spain, as long as you meet the consulate’s documentation requirements.
These typically include proof of financial dependency, an apostilled single status certificate, and evidence that the child is listed as a dependent on your taxes and health insurance.
There is no strict age limit for dependents, as long as dependency can be demonstrated. This has been confirmed in cases where adult children, even over 30 years old, were successfully included in family applications
Requirements may vary slightly between consulates, so it’s essential to verify the specific rules for your jurisdiction.
