Question
Is it true that if you get the Spanish Digital Nomad Visa, you also can reside anywhere in the EU? And if so, why apply through Spain and not the EU? I only want to live in Spain at this time, but I was just curious.
Answers
These are the answers of some Facebook group members:
“No. The visa is for Spain and you need to spend the bulk of your time in Spain. There is no EU-wide visa. But still you can travel in EU during that time. There are no borders. And only AFTER you get your TIE card.”
“So you should still be able to travel to the EU during your DNV ….. Let’s wait until the end of March as there are many questions which hopefully will be answered”
“I assume that the same rules will apply as for NLV (Spanish non lucrative visa), that is, you can be outside Spain an average of 2 months per year, but that’s not yet clear”
“I believe that part has already been officially announced on the government website that you must be in Spain at least 6 months out of the year, so more wiggle room for those of us that will have to beck and forth.”
“I think you can travel slightly more than NLV because they assume you will travel for work. I thought I read you have to be in country for 6 months a year. (They still want you to be a tax resident)” Check our Q&A When does the 183-day period start for tax residency in Spain?
In conclusion, while some members of Spainguru’s Facebook group had differing opinions, it appears that the Spanish DNV does not allow for residency in the entire EU. The visa is for Spain and the applicant is required to spend the bulk of their time in Spain. However, during this time, it is possible to travel within the EU. It is important to note that the exact rules and requirements for the DNV are still evolving, and it is best to check with official sources for the most up-to-date information.
