This firsthand Spain Non Lucrative Visa renewal experience highlights the full 2025 process, from online submission to TIE pickup.
“We just did our year 2/3 Spain Non Lucrative Visa renewal and just wanted to give you an update.
Our TIE card expired middle of April 2025. We renewed online the end of February 2025 and received the approval beginning of April (just a little over 4 weeks). We were told that we cannot make an appointment at the National Police until the TIE card expired.
We kept checking for appointments since April but it keeps saying that none are available in the entire province. I always checked by entering our info manually. We checked multiple times a day and at different times.
It was quite a frustrating process of searching nonstop for 5-6 weeks until I noticed that it says more appointments are available by checking with your electronic certificate. From then on, we used the certificate to check.
I used my certificate to login and then you can enter the NIE number for other people. Once we started logging in with the certificate, within 2 weeks we secured 3 appointments (in Alicante, Elda and Denia).
It took roughly 2 weeks for our lote number to come up. Every office has a different procedure for pickup of the card.
- Denia: you have to go back into the system and look for an appointment for pickup.
- Elda: made the appointment for you when we were there for the paperwork processing.
- Alicante: we were told we also needed to make an appointment for pickup but there were never any appointments. So we decided to go and ask and found out that they will let you pick up the card without any appts. The entire time the lote number on the Extranjería website showed a lower number but if you check their Instagram or Facebook site, it shows the more updated number (see sign that was posted at the door for Alicante).
The entire process from submitting application to pickup of the card was about 3 months with the most time spent looking for the actual fingerprinting appointment.

Questions and Answers
Q1: Did you need to provide bank statements?
A1: Yes, we uploaded 3 months of bank statements from our U.S. investment account.
Q2: Did you sworn translate the bank statements?
A2: We submitted our application in February and did not translate them. However, the website was updated in May 2025, and it seems translations might now be required.
Q3: What did you provide for proof of integration? Did it need to be notarized or translated?
A3: I uploaded the enrollment form for Spanish classes by the Ayuntamiento. No letter, notary, or sworn translation. Proof of integration is optional but can help show your commitment to Spain.
Q4: What is an “integration letter”?
A4: There’s no official definition, but proof of integration can include class enrollment, cultural or community activities. It’s listed as optional on the Mercurio site.
Q5: Do you have to enroll in Spanish classes for renewal?
A5: No. It’s optional. I enrolled to learn the language faster, and it helps show willingness to integrate.
Q6: What did you use as proof of school enrollment for your child?
A6: We submitted a letter from the school where our child is currently attending.
Q7: Can you do a joint application online for the family?
A7: No. Each person must apply individually using their own electronic certificate. For our child, we submitted the application using one parent’s certificate.
Q8: Do you need a new birth certificate for minors every renewal?
A8: We reused the apostilled birth certificate from our original application. You will need to present it again during the TIE appointment.
Q9: Is there a direct link for the required renewal documents?
A9: Yes: Renewal Process – Inclusion.gob.es
Q10: When should you get a new Padron for renewal?
A10: We uploaded it during the renewal application and brought it to the Policía Nacional. It’s recommended but might be optional.
