Spain Digital Nomad Visa: Is Empadronamiento Required and How to Handle Entry?

Question

“Hi! My partner will get their NIE at the Spanish consulate in their home country, then apply for the Spain Digital Nomad Visa in Spain.

  • Three questions:
  • Is empadronamiento required, or is the NIE enough to start the process?
  • At the airport, should they say they’re a tourist or mention the visa application?
  • Can we translate documents into Spanish in a third country, or must they be done by a sworn translator in Spain?”

Answers

These are the answers of Spainguru’s Spain Digital Nomad Visa group members:

“No.”

“With other clients we just usually say they are here for tourism — just less hassle that way.”

Spain Digital Nomad Visa: Is Empadronamiento Required and How to Handle Entry?

“I believe you can only use the approved sworn translators by the Spanish Govt. so if they are based there that could work as well.”

“It needs to be a sworn translator on the Spanish govt list. Usually you send them PDFs of the docs and they send PDFs back. It’s irrelevant where in the world they or you are.”

“You don’t need the padrón, but in addition to the NIE, you do need a digital certificate to be able to submit the applications online yourself.”

“I started the process of requesting a digital certificate and was immediately issued a request record number with instructions to schedule an appointment at a local near me, or to go to a location that accepts walk-ins for identity verification. In your experience, is the walk-in option a good way to go about it?”

“No idea, I’ve always worked with appointments.”

“I’ll try to set an appointment for the day after we arrive in country.”

Conclusion

According to members of the Spainguru community, empadronamiento is not required to initiate the Spain Digital Nomad Visa application.

However, having a digital certificate in addition to the NIE is necessary for online submission.

When entering Spain, it’s generally advised to say you are coming for tourism purposes to avoid unnecessary scrutiny.

As for document translations, it is essential they are done by a sworn translator recognized by the Spanish government, regardless of where the translator is based.

Many members successfully handle this process online by exchanging PDFs with government-approved translators.
