Question

Which city or area in Spain would you recommend for a family with a special needs teenager to move to?

Answers

These are the answers from Spainguru’s Facebook group members:

Madrid, Seville, Granada, Valencia or Córdoba”

“I saw many special needs and wheelchair bound children in Bilbao yesterday and they were so sweet and smiling. I’m an ESE paraprofessional in Florida. I cried (in happiness) watching children at schools here being free and loved 😊😔”

“I won’t recommend Spain at all. Full of bullying here and they don’t do anything. Maybe Bilbao they are kind of different.”

“I would recommend Valencia as a city. Then you have to find a good public school willing to see to those special needs. Communication with school is key.”

Conclusion

From the Spainguru community discussion, several cities were mentioned when talking about moving to Spain with a teenager who has special needs. Madrid, Seville, Granada, Córdoba, Valencia, and Bilbao all came up, each for different reasons and personal observations.

Some contributors highlighted positive experiences, particularly in Bilbao and Valencia, noting inclusive environments and the importance of supportive schools. Others shared concerns, including experiences with bullying and a lack of adequate response, which shows that experiences can vary widely depending on location and school.

For families moving to Spain with a special needs teenager, the key takeaway is that choosing the right city is important, but finding a school that is willing to communicate and support the teenager’s needs is essential.
