Question
My husband’s and my son’s US passport got stolen in Spain (Barcelona). They were supposed to fly back to the US in the morning of Tuesday August 16th.
It seems there is no way they can stop by the US Consulate in Barcelona to get a new passport before Tuesday itself, since Monday is a holiday in all of Spain. Anybody knows of an alternative way in which they could still fly back on Tuesday, like for example getting an emergency passport at the airport?

These are the answers of some Facebook group members:
“You’ll need to start by going to the police and getting a report. With this report I think an emergency travel document can be issues. As theft is so common here I’m sure the police/mossos will be able to explain to you what to do. Best is to go to this one. There’s always English speaking police available. The wait may be long though. Good luck. Mossos d’Esquadra – Ciutat Vella 933 06 23 00
“All consulates have emergency numbers that work when the consulate is closed and they are the ones who issue EDT (emergency travel documents). EDT documents only allow to fly back to your country of residence. EDT are issued immediately. You will need a police report and proof to confirm their identity.”
“Absolutely go to the police. Most thieves aren’t looking for passports, just cash and items to sell. Likely they were thrown on the street and someone may have turned into police.
Otherwise I can’t imagine an airline letting them in a plane bound for the US without a passport.
A friend just had this happen. They lined up early at the Embassy and had an emergency passport in a couple of hours. Bummer that Monday is a Spanish holiday.
You might also consider going to the airport today and asking at the check in counter what can be done. They can at least figure out the best rebooking options.”
“Report that to the police immediately and go to the embassy or consulate close to you
You would have a document that allows you to fly ( if the embassy gives you one)
At the same time contact your airline to explain the situation and send them the report (if possible try to translate it) So you have worked in both lines as you may have the possibility to change your flight return with no fees or no extra fees Good luck”
“Go to make a police report today asap and call the embassy emergency number. The police report is needed to expedite an emergency travel doc, and they will contact you if the passports were turned in to pick them up. My wallet was stolen a few years ago and the police contacted me when it was found with all my IDs.”
