Question
I am gathering information on healthcare costs and coverage prior to applying for the Spain Non Lucrative Visa for my family. What Spanish health insurance company would be best for a 67 year old with uncomplicated diabetes, my 25 year old wife and my two sons ages 10 and 15, all 3 of them no health issues.
Secondly, after one year in Spain (Convenio Especial) I understand I can convert our private health care cover to the Spanish public healthcare system. I understand the cost for me to do that for me is around 160 Euros monthly with some help on my prescriptions. Does the 160 Euros cover just me or the entire family?
If just me, how much is the monthly coverage cost for each of my dependents to access the public system? My dependents will become citizens 2 years after arrival.
I assume at that point there is no longer any costs for them to access the public health system and there is no longer any monetary requirement for me to have income or savings regards them for me to continue my NLV for the 5 years until I convert to permanent?
Answers
“What passport do you have? And why will your dependents become citizens after 2 years?” – “USA. My sons are dual citizens USA/ Philippines and were born in the Philippines and my wife is a Filipina.”
“With the same symptoms like yours at 64, I opted for AdesLas health insurance company with 1300€ for 11 months and 550€ for each of my family members.”
“If you are collecting a British state pension you can apply for an S1 which is acceptable healthcare cover for the visa and your wife can piggyback on it too. I don’t know the situation with regards to your children.”
“I’m a 68 single American with no underlying medical conditions and I got my policy from SALUS… paid 200€ a month, only exclusion was my hips which were both replaced this year!”
“First, no such thing as uncomplicated diabetes. It will not be covered by private health insurance. You will probably be on private health insurance for the first two years. It cost me $3100 to insure my family of three ages 62, 48 and 12.
My understanding is over 65 is a LOT more. Your dependents become eligible in 2 years but it may take 2-3 after that before they become citizens.
Dont hold your breath. Spain is slow and that is putting it mildly. You will need to show income around $52k per year for 5 years. It can also be savings. When you become permanent residents after 5 years no need to show income.
A requirement for citizenship is proficiency in speaking Spanish. All this is from experience. I’m on my second year. The amounts I mentioned could be off by a little bit. I converted from euros to dollars.
You can live here on much less but that is the amount you need every year for the visa. Also I heard the amount has increased but I don’t know by how much. I don’t think they apply that increase yet. Buena Suerte.”
“In terms of health insurance, here you can get non binding quotes from the top health insurance companies in Spain (ASSSA, DKV, Asisa, Adeslas & Sanitas) and all are fully compliant with any Spanish visa requirements (0 copay, 0 waiting times, full coverage). Get your quotes immediately right after filing the online form.”
“I am not an expert in Convenio Especial. I’ve found this that might be interesting:”
Conclusion
The responses indicate a range of experiences and suggestions regarding health insurance for those applying for the Spain Non Lucrative Visa. While some suggest specific insurance companies like Adeslas and SALUS, others emphasize the complexities related to age and medical conditions like diabetes.
The cost of private insurance can vary significantly, with some indicating high costs for older applicants and others suggesting more reasonable rates. Transitioning to the public Spanish healthcare system after a year seems to be an option, but clarity is needed on whether the fee covers just the applicant or the entire family.
