Question
In general, what’s the best/quickest way for a US citizen to get a Spain digital nomad visa? Does it make more sense to go to Spain with the 3-month tourist visa and coordinate it all over there vs. working with a US consulate office?
Would be working remotely for a large US company, so hopefully wouldn’t have any issues getting approved, but a little concerned about moving everything there and not getting approved.
Answers
These are the answers of Spainguru’s Spain Digital Nomad Visa group members:
“Applying within Spain means you can be granted a visa for up to 3 years, while applying through a consulate means you only get a one-year visa. Note that very few W2 employees have been accepted for the visa.”
“The process is harder (or impossible) for W2 employees because the U.S. social security Certificate of Coverage is not accepted by the UGE. Your employer would need to do much more.”
“If you can switch to a 1099 employee, it’s much easier to apply from Spain after gathering your US-based documents.”
“Applying from Spain can be a better option, and approval can take as little as 5 to 29 days. Some applicants were able to stay as tourists, apply, and return to the US to finalize their move.”
“The cost of applying varies depending on the number of applicants and services used, with translation and legal fees adding up to thousands of dollars.”
“Spain’s tax rate is higher than in the US, and many expats struggle with financial sustainability due to double taxation concerns, even with tax treaties in place.”
“Just the sheer amount of documents required, translated, Apostilled, etc. adds up. My family of 4 spent about $10k getting the DNV by the time it was all said and done.”
Conclusion
Applying for the Spain Digital Nomad Visa from within Spain can result in a longer visa duration of up to 3 years, compared to the one-year validity if applying from a US consulate.
However, applicants working as W2 employees for US companies may face challenges due to Spain’s social security requirements. Switching to a 1099 contractor status may increase approval chances.
Costs can range from $2,000 to $10,000, depending on translation and legal assistance needs. Thorough preparation and professional guidance are recommended to ensure a smooth application process.
